With home wins over Park View and Loudoun County this week, they improved their district record to 3-0 and now sit atop the Dulles District in first place. Marshal Ivan Kander, who grew up in Waterford, and currently resides in Silver Spring, Md., has been named the recipient of the 2012 Sergeant William Genaust Award, given for a documentary and short subject (40 minutes or less) dealing creatively with U.S. Marine Corps heritage or Marine Corps life. The award will be presented at the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s Annual Awards Ceremony April 21, 2012 at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va. Kander is being honored for “Survive. Recover. Live.,” which documents the recovery process of his friend Rob Jones, who lost his legs in Afghanistan. … Continue Reading

Ashley Morris, a freshman at Woodgrove High School, received a scholarship to attend Nature Camp in Vesuvius, Virginia located in the George Washington National Forest for the June 2012 session. This award, presented to her by The Garden Study Club of Loudoun marks her second year attending Nature Camp. In June of 2011 Ashley chose natural art, forestry and astronomy for her curriculum. She enjoyed nature hikes, morning bird walks and swimming in mountain pools and streams. Classes were held daily and workbooks were required on each subject. Only two students were selected for awards of excellence in the overall program, and Ashley was one of them.

An Honor Student at Woodgrove High School, Ashley lives with her family outside of Hillsboro.

Organizers of the 43rd Annual Bluemont Fair, to be held September 15 and 16 2012 invite artists of all ages and abilities to submit designs for consideration as the logo for this year’s poster and brochure. The theme this year is “Old Time Country Fair”, incorporating scenes of Bluemont’s historic buildings, such as the old stone church.

Submitted designs should be rendered simply with minimal color that can be easily replicated on the Bluemont Fair’s distinctive poster, t-shirt, mug, etc. The artist’s name will be printed on the poster and his/her work acknowledged in Bluemont Fair publicity. Saturday, April 14, 2012 is the Town of Purcellville’s Annual Town-wide Beautification Day from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Purcellville invites all citizens, families, individuals, scout and church groups to participate in this worthy effort. This event will include planting flowers and roadside clean ups.
