Two Brothers in War

May 29, 2012 News, People Comments Off on Two Brothers in War

By John P. Flannery

On Memorial Day, we remember those who served in war and acknowledge their sacrifice of time from family and friends, from young ambition, and from life itself, so that they could give to a nation to preserve and protect the freedom it represents.

These recruits were almost always young and that made their sacrifice the greater.

Brothers Charles and John enlisted in what many thought was the greatest war, the war against Hitler. Their parents were supportive. Irish friends thought, however, they should be helping Hitler instead – to beat the English for what the Brits did to Ireland. … Continue Reading

Lady Vikings Make it to Regional Semifinals in Lacrosse

May 29, 2012 Sports Comments Off on Lady Vikings Make it to Regional Semifinals in Lacrosse

The Loudoun Valley Ladies’ Lacrosse team made it to the Regional semifinals, but lost to crosstown rival and Dulles District champion Woodgrove, ending their season. With one of the youngest teams in recent memory, Valley surprised everyone with a highly successful season despite only returning 8 upperclassmen from last year’s team.

In dramatic fashion, the team had earned a bid to the Regional tournament with their overtime win over Tuscarora in Dulles District competition on Wednesday, May 16. The game was about as tense and exciting as it gets as both teams struggled to move on to qualify for the next round of play. The Lady Vikings, who beat Tuscarora handily just weeks ago in the regular season, took an early lead, but had their hands full as it was apparent the Huskies would not go quietly this time around. … Continue Reading

Town of Purcellville Tears Down Hundreds of Trees in Preparation for the Southern Collector Road

May 29, 2012 Feature 2 comments

Video below the fold.

In May 2012 the Town of Purcellville tore down hundreds of trees, including nearly 100 fruit producing trees, on the 250 year old working farm, Crooked Run Orchard. The Town of Purcellville condemned by quick take over half of the 16 acre parcel (one of three parcels of the working farm totaling over 90 acres), to build the Southern Collector Road, many say will facilitate more future development in the area.

This action has split the farm in two with Sam Brown not having access to farm his back 45 acres, which include a peach orchard. To date the town has no plans for Mr. Brown or his customers to gain access to the back portion of his pick your own farm.

No To Partnership With MWAA

May 28, 2012 Dear Editor, Opinion Comments Off on No To Partnership With MWAA

As a resident of Loudoun County, I am uncomfortable with a partnership with MWAA to extend a metro line into Loudoun. According to the 12 May article in Washington Times by David Sharfinski, an inspector general from the U.S. Department of Transportation has found MWAA “rife with mismanagement, a glaring lack of transparency and lavish spending habits that have included thousand-dollar dinners and a $9200 plane ticket to Prague…” Can we really afford to be partnered with this organization and not know our money will be spent? … Continue Reading

Landscaping Fraud Suspect Apprehended in Maryland

May 28, 2012 News, Public Safety Comments Off on Landscaping Fraud Suspect Apprehended in Maryland

An investigation into a landscaper fraud case has led to the arrest of a Maryland man for construction fraud. The suspect, David W. Lawson, 35, of Hagerstown, MD, was apprehended in Washington County, MD, Tuesday, after detectives with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office obtained warrants for six counts of construction fraud (five felony charges) and one count of obtaining money by false pretenses. The suspect is accused of offering yard work from Dave’s Lawn Service and required a prepaid contract for the services to be completed. In most of the cases the suspect never completed the work, or failed to even start. Recent cases have been reported in the Wild Meadow Court area of Ashburn, Raspberry Falls and River Creek. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office began investigating the suspect in late April after receiving several complaints from the community. The investigation, including outreach to the community, uncovered numerous victims in Loudoun County, with approximately $15,000 in total losses to homeowners. If you believe you were a victim of this suspect, you are asked to contact Detective J. Halley of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 703-777-0475. Lawson remains held in Maryland pending extradition.
