In an effort to further reach out to the community, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office announced the agency is now on Instagram at www.instagram.com/loudounsheriff. The social media site will allow the agency to share pictures and video of featured cases and Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office events. “In an effort to reach out to all areas of the public, we wanted to further connect with the young adults in our community,” said Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman. “We believe Instagram is one social media platform that can help us make this connection,” he added. The Loudoun Sheriff’s Office currently utilizes several social media sites in an attempt to reach out to a wider audience.
The agency is currently on Facebook, Twitter as well YouTube. Members of the Facebook community are encouraged to become a fan of the Sheriff’s Office page on Facebook at www.facebook.com/loudounsheriff. The agency has integrated the Alert Loudoun system (http://alert.loudoun.gov) with Facebook and Twitter. Alerts issued through the system will appear as status updates on the Facebook fan page and be sent as tweets through Twitter. The Alert Loudoun system currently has nearly 90-thousand subscribers. Residents are encouraged to sign up and receive Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office alerts on serious crimes, traffic closures and other announcements. The information can be sent to your e-mail as well as cell phones or pagers that receive text messaging. The free service is available to anyone with an e-mail account Since taking office in 2012, Loudoun Sheriff Michael L. Chapman has worked to improve the outreach and communication with the community. In October 2012, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) unveiled a new website with several innovative and interactive features. A major component of the site is an online crime reporting option that allows residents to file a report at a time that is best for them without having to wait for a deputy to respond or call them back.
The agency website, located at www.sheriff.loudoun.gov, also features a Community Resource Directory enabling Loudoun County residents to find community resources for health and human services. The agency continues to offer an online service allowing residents to view near real-time crime reporting information in their community at www.sheriff.loudoun.gov/crimereports . The crime reporting map is updated every night and provides residents with an interactive online mapping and analysis service to learn about the types of crimes committed in their community. Residents are also able to use a searchable mapping system to locate their nearest Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Station at www.sheriff.loudoun.gov/findmystation. This will enable residents to find the closest station that provides services such as fingerprinting, background checks or where they can obtain copies of accident reports. The mapping system also helps residents locate the station area and service sector in which they live, enabling users to better understand crime data released by the agency in daily and quarterly reports. A recent enhancement to the website includes a traffic incident mapping page using online mapping resources.
The site can be viewed at www.sheriff.loudoun.gov/traffic or www.sheriff.loudoun.gov/mobiletraffic on your mobile device. The page lists and plots real-time information on traffic-related incidents dispatched by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center. The increased online presence is one aspect of Sheriff Chapman’s goals to deliver Service, Technology, Efficiency, and Professionalism (STEP-UP) to the agency.
