A crowd of 50,000 will gather at Great Meadow Saturday, May 5 to celebrate the 87th running of the Virginia Gold Cup, one of the largest steeplechases in the US, and one of the D.C. region’s largest outdoor events.
Robert Duvall, Godfather actor and friend of the races, will present the trophy to the winner of this year’s Virginia Gold Cup race. The race is fifth on the schedule and will run at approximately 3:45 p.m., with trophy presentation to follow.
Held every year on the first Saturday in May, the Virginia Gold Cup is Virginia’s answer to the Kentucky Derby. It’s held in the heart of beautiful Virginia horse country, within close proximity to Washington, D.C.
Race day features six hurdle and timber races, Jack Russell Terrier races, tent, tailgate and hat contests, and over 30 vendors on site.
