The Virginia Transit Association (VTA) honored Delegate Joe May at their annual awards ceremony in Fairfax with the 2012 Transit Advocate Award for his outstanding leadership on behalf of public transportation.
As Chair of the House Appropriations transportation subcommittee, Delegate May seized the opportunity to help advance Delegate Jim Scott’s (House District 53) transit funding amendment this year to provide an additional $10 million in transit operating funds. It was especially important this year with increasing ridership and fuel costs and more demand for service. These funds will minimize service cuts, fare increases and help accommodate new service.
As a transit advocate, Delegate May has worked with the transit community on many bills and is a dedicated supporter for expanded public transportation and rail. Over his many years in office, he has played an instrumental role in securing funds to maintain and expand public transportation.
