This Week in Greater Loudoun Babe Ruth- July 1 though 7

July 3, 2012 by Blue Ridge Leader filed under Sports No Comments

16-18u District Team

The 16-18u District Team (Loudoun Lions) won the District championship last weekend, and progressed to the VA State Tournament this weekend at Chantilly High School. The Lions met their first loss in the first round to Greater Fairfax Friday night. The Lions then went on to win two games Saturday, defeating the Greater Richmond (D3) and Vienna (D13). The Lions started Sunday against the team that had sent them to the lower half of the bracket, Greater Fairfax (D13). Both teams played well, tying the game in the third at 6-6. The teams traded zeros in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, until a short blooper by Greater Fairfax allowed runners in scoring position. Fairfax put up two runs and held the Lions in the bottom of the seventh to win the game and send the Lions out of the tourney. Greater Fairfax went on to eliminate Winchester afterwards, in an excellent game from both sides. Winchester fought back in the top of the seventh, scoring seven runs to take a 14-12 lead. Greater Fairfax roared back with their own handiwork, and scored three runs to take the game.

Greater Fairfax will face Northern Fairfax tomorrow for Game 1 of the Championship. Greater Fairfax has to win the game at 5:30 p.m. to force the second game at 7:30 p.m. The games will be held at Chantilly High School.

13u District Team

The 13u District Team will be next up in their District tournaments, starting Friday July 6th at Smith Lake Park in Stafford. Four teams will vie for the District title, Manassas, Gainesville-Haymarket, GLBR and host Stafford. GLBR plays Friday at 6pm against Stafford.

14u / 13-15u District Teams

The final two teams will get started the following week, July 12th through Sunday July 15th.

GLBR will be hosting the 13-15u District Tournament at Fireman’s Field. Volunteers will be needed to keep score, run the scoreboard and assist with a variety of duties. Contact John Gantt at playeragent@glbr.org to volunteer for any of the available jobs and times.

and finally…

13-15u Players for the 2013 World Series Teams:

As previously announced, GLBR will be hosting the 15U Babe Ruth World Series here in Purcellville. With the early announcement GLBR will be forming the team in August of this year to have it ready for the WS played in Mid-August of 2013. Here is a basic outline of the schedule for the team to give players an idea of the commitment that will be required.

Mid August 2012
Try outs will be held and team will be formed

September 2012
Team will play fall ball in NVTBL and Tournaments

Winter 2012/13
Team will do some winter work outs (released to HS teams)

Spring 2013
Team members will have to play in GLBR to qualify for WS

Summer 2013
Team will play NVTBL and Tournaments (June, July, and August)

August 17-25 of 2013
World Series Tournament

For those players chosen this team will need to be their priority (other than your High School spring team). Due to the late date of this tournament and the early start of Loudoun HS Football next season, it is unlikely football players will be eligible. If you are interested in trying out for this team please notify the District Management Committee at DMCommittee@GLBR.org.

Information about planning and schedules will be kept posted under the 2013 15u World Series Host page under the Babe Ruth World Series button on the front page of the GLBR web site.
