Join in the commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the 1862 crossing of the Rappahannock River near Remington, VA by enslaved persons in a courageous act of self-emancipation; as well as the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s signing of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. The program will include brief but pithy presentations by historians John Hennessy, Clark Hall and key note speaker Dr. Dianne Swann-Wright, a hymn sing performed by the newly formed River Bank Choir, a limited recreation of the crossing from Culpeper to Fauquier and the reading of a partial list names of Culpeper-born slaves.
