Free Garden Lecture – The Chestnut Story
Catherine Mayes, Chairman of the Virginia Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation, will tell us "The Chestnut Story" and the foundation's exciting efforts to breed a blight resistant chestnut so that one day soon we will be able to return the American chestnut to its former niche in the Appalachian hardwood forest ecosystem.
The American Chestnut Foundation's goal is to restore the American chestnut to our eastern woodlands following the devastation wreaked by Asian chestnut blight a little over 100 years ago. Catherine, a certified Virginia Master Naturalist, is also treasurer of the Virginia Native Plant Society, a gardener, birder, and dairy farmer.
