The Purpose Filled GSA Women

November 11, 2012 Dear Editor, Opinion Comments Off on The Purpose Filled GSA Women

The purpose filled Good Shepherd Alliance (GSA) Women who staff our headquarters office in Ashburn have found an exceptional purpose for their lives. The organization established 29 years ago as the first county homeless shelter, has grown into a goal oriented intensive case management six-step approach to self-sufficiency available to all our housing residents. The staff also provides numerous outreach and referral programs to assist individuals and families in near homeless situations through our food pantry, counseling and case management services and thrift store voucher program.

The GSA works together with these other area organizations to support them and the individuals and families they serve. Rather than stocking large amounts of supplies, they pass on to other groups any surplus they have collected through food, coat and supply drives. Cooperative relationships with county programs, shelters, counseling services and other resources allow all service providers to better serve the same individuals and families without duplicating effort and maximizing the impact in our community. … Continue Reading

492 Walk for Shelter through Historic Leesburg

September 17, 2012 Events, Lifestyle Comments Off on 492 Walk for Shelter through Historic Leesburg

By Mark Gunderman, GSA Board Chair

The 2012 GSA Walk for Shelter kicked-off at Douglass School Pavilion on East Market Street in Leesburg with a record 492 men, women, students and children participating. The 1.2 mile walk continued through historic downtown Leesburg. Special family activities following the walk included moon bounces, face painting and balloon animals. A free barbeque and grilled hot dog lunch was served by Common Ground Church (Leesburg) and Christ Community Church (Ashburn). Leesburg Supervisor Ken Reid was a featured guest speaker and town police and parks and recreation personnel supported the event. God bless all.

The GSA prays that all our small steps taken today would lead to larger steps toward helping the homeless tomorrow. We believe that each walker might be a voice for those whose voices are rarely heard. Many grandparents, parents and children walked with GSA board members and staff. Parents have previously said that the walk provided an educational experience raising awareness about homelessness. The youth especially gained appreciation for the many blessings provided by their own families.
