Between mid-May and mid-June, local students attending Hampden-Sydney College studied the Spanish language, culture, and contemporary issues at the Universidad de Alcalá De Henares in Spain. Taking this May Term Abroad class were:
Tyler Charleston Ikwild, a graduate of Loudoun Valley High School and the son of Chip & Joyce Ikwild of Philomont.
Harry Wooten Squire, a graduate of Brunswick Academy and the son of Hall & Molly Squire of Emporia.
This opportunity is offered to Hampden-Sydney students by the Global Education and Study Abroad Department at H-SC through the University of Franklin at the Universidad de Alcalá. Students reside in private homes during their stay and the personal contact with host families provides a first-hand experience of Spanish life and culture.
Tours of Madrid and Alcalá de Henares include a visit to Cervantes’ birthplace (Alcalá de Henares), Las Ventas bullring (Madrid), El Retiro, El Palacio de Oriente and its surrounding gardens, La Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and the Universidad Complutense.
