Dominion Utility Crews Head to Northeast to Help Neighbors

November 3, 2012 by Blue Ridge Leader Business, News Comments Off on Dominion Utility Crews Head to Northeast to Help Neighbors

As part of the utility industry’s Mutual Assistance program, nearly 1,500 crews from Dominion Virginia Power are en route to help with the massive restoration effort underway in New York and New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy left over 9.6 million powerless. Immediately following complete restoration of the 322,000 Dominion customers who lost power in Virginia, crew members packed trucks and belongings to help in an effort that is currently more than 60,000-people strong.

The Mutual Assistance network is unique to the electric utility industry. Utilities in need of help in affected areas are matched with a variety of available workers and crews from utility companies across the country. Such crews include a variety of workers: line workers, agriculture workers, underground cable workers, and storm damage patrollers.

The largest deployment of mutual assistance resources in Dominion’s history, these 1,500 crews will work 16-hour shifts in unfamiliar territory until their neighbors in the Northeast have electricity 100-percent restored.

Chapman has notified all essential personnel within the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office of the county’s severe weather procedures. Loudoun County officials are also urging residents to prepare now for the possibility of high winds and heavy rains next week.

These precautions include simple steps, such as:

  • Stock or re-stock emergency supply kits, including extra batteries, etc.
  • Clean out gutters and storm drains. Keep drains clear of trash, leaves and branches, so that rainwaters can easily flow, reducing possible flooding and ponding situations. … Continue Reading
