Joshua's hands

As the seasons change and we start to bring another year to a close, Joshua’s Hands will again offer their annual Fall Festival as a free gift to the community – to celebrate the autumn and the change of seasons – a time to be grateful.

This festival has become a Loudoun tradition you won’t want to miss. Located on Rt. 9 just five miles west of Waterford, the Guthrie farm offers views of the mountains and a gathering place for festival goers.
Joshua’s Hands was established in January of 1999, after Joshua’s death (October of 1998) in a car accident. He was 16 and the second of seven children. Joshua’s Hands has a five-fold ministry – like the fingers on a hand: the Annual Fall Festival, American Heritage Education, Community Service, Teen Safe Driving and Scholarships. As part of the heritage programming, Joshua’s Hands offered quilting camps this summer. They also offered two Valiant Warrior Quilting Events that brought together the community (quilters and non-quilters) to make quilts for wounded warriors. In the process, friendships were made, skills were learned and quilts were sent to the front lines to comfort wounded warriors. (701 quilts since January 2011.) … Continue Reading

A Servant’s Heart Scholarships

Joshua’s Hands was established in 1999 in memory of Joshua Guthrie, who was an enthusiastic community volunteer. Joshua’s years of service were cut short by his death at the age of 16. Joshua’s Hands seeks to continue to be his hands of service in the community and to encourage others to serve.

In addition to teen safe driving education, an annual Fall Festival that is free to the community, community service and heritage education programs, the organization offers A Servant’s Heart Scholarship. The scholarship is essay based and has the potential for three winners.

The 2013 recipients are from varied backgrounds with diverse interests. Laura Andrews (Tuscarora High School) will pursue a degree in International Studies & Economics at the College of William and Mary in the fall. She understands that service is purposeful. In her essay she wrote, “Serving others doesn’t just occur in big, once a year events. It happens in random acts of kindness, and in listening to one another. In life, it’s easy to get swept up in the day to day events and let service fall by the wayside.” … Continue Reading

Joshua’s Hands Donates Quilts to Boulder Crest Retreat in Bluemont

By Mark Gunderman

In January 2011, Joshua’s Hands gathered volunteers from around Loudoun County to work on quilts for wounded warriors. In a ten-day session, volunteers made twenty-nine quilts and realized that this would not be a one-time effort. People loved the opportunity to gather in support of our troops and to “do something” with tangible results to help. What they also appreciated was the opportunity to work with other volunteers of all ages and abilities in a mentoring environment. When the session was completed, everyone learned something and all involved felt deep satisfaction with the final product. … Continue Reading

Joshua’s Hands Needs Your Help

December 4, 2012 Dear Editor, Opinion Comments Off on Joshua’s Hands Needs Your Help
Joshuas_Hands_Barn

Many lives were impacted by Hurricane Sandy. We know that many of you, like us have financially supported efforts to help those in the Northeast who will be recovering for years to come. If you have not given, we strongly encourage you to do so through Samaritan’s Purse – they are doing a great work. You can donate time or money and know that you’re making a difference.

Here in Virginia, this 200+ year-old barn lost its roof and doors. This barn has been the center of Joshua’s Hands Fall Festival for years in Loudoun County. Although our loss does not compare to those who have lost homes, it is still a loss. We know so many of you have giving hearts. We’re placing this need before you – like the Walmart principal. Many small gifts can get this big project done. … Continue Reading
