Easy As 1 2 3

February 4, 2013 Dear Editor, Opinion Comments Off on Easy As 1 2 3

Once again we’re hearing the call for increased taxes on Virginia’s families. There’s no question that our lawmakers face some tough decisions trying to adequately fund core services like transportation. Instead of raising taxes, they should cut out wasteful spending. Here are three ideas to start with:

Idea 1: Substitute express buses for wasteful spending on rail-transit systems that make no financial or transportation sense. Bus routing is more flexible than fixed-rail trains, and buses operate at a fraction of the cost of rail. The Virginia highway fund is going dry because over a third of it is used for public transportation and other pet projects like Dulles Rail. Leaders have been siphoning off money from your gas taxes for decades to promote economic development schemes like the Silver Line. Few people use rail and everyone else subsidizes it; rail costs at least four times as much, per passenger mile, as driving. … Continue Reading

Wolf Releases Statement on DOT IG Report on MWAA

November 1, 2012 Development, News Comments Off on Wolf Releases Statement on DOT IG Report on MWAA
Frank_wolf

Rep. Frank Wolf (VA-10) issued the following statement on the release of the Department of Transportation’s IG report on the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority (MWAA):

“The MWAA described in this report is not the MWAA created 25 years ago. Something has gone terribly wrong in recent years as the board that governs MWAA spiraled into dysfunction. MWAA must immediately implement all the recommendations detailed in the IG’s report so it returns to the authority we once knew.

“The issues raised by the IG are serious and troubling. The successful operation of Ronald Reagan and Washington Dulles airports and the Metrorail extension project requires an organization that is ethical, honest and beyond reproach. Public trust in MWAA is imperative as the airports are partly funded by taxpayer money, and the extension project partly by tolls on the Dulles Toll Road. MWAA must be a good public steward of taxpayer and toll-payer dollars. … Continue Reading

Wolf Introduces Bill to Give Virginia Majority on MWAA Board

August 11, 2012 Government, News 2 comments
Frank_wolf

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10th) has introduced legislation to reduce the size of the board of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) and give Virginia a clear majority of the seats.

“The MWAA board in place today is not what was envisioned 25 years ago,” Wolf said. “This board is broken and broken badly.”

Wolf said the current board lacks transparency and accountability, pointing to a series of appalling decisions over the past two years, including a $200,000 confidential settlement with an unsuccessful candidate to run the authority and sweetheart deals for former board members and board staff. Lavish travel around the globe by board members also has come under scrutiny. … Continue Reading
