The Greater Loudoun Babe Ruth 13U All Stars are the District 8 Champions. The GLBR “LoCos” shut out their opponents scoring 32 unanswered runs in the District tournament: 17-0 vs. Stafford, 7-0 vs. Manassas and 8-0 in a rematch against Stafford. The LoCos kept their cool playing in record heat and humidity, with impressive focus and hard work. A speedy, accurate outfield turned potential doubles into outs at second base. Double plays, athletic catches and and solid teamwork in the infield kept their opponents from reaching third base in almost every inning. The performances from the mound were spectacular, with strike out after strike out. … Continue Reading

16-18u District Team

The 16-18u District Team (Loudoun Lions) won the District championship last weekend, and progressed to the VA State Tournament this weekend at Chantilly High School. The Lions met their first loss in the first round to Greater Fairfax Friday night. The Lions then went on to win two games Saturday, defeating the Greater Richmond (D3) and Vienna (D13). The Lions started Sunday against the team that had sent them to the lower half of the bracket, Greater Fairfax (D13). Both teams played well, tying the game in the third at 6-6. The teams traded zeros in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, until a short blooper by Greater Fairfax allowed runners in scoring position. Fairfax put up two runs and held the Lions in the bottom of the seventh to win the game and send the Lions out of the tourney. Greater Fairfax went on to eliminate Winchester afterwards, in an excellent game from both sides. Winchester fought back in the top of the seventh, scoring seven runs to take a 14-12 lead. Greater Fairfax roared back with their own handiwork, and scored three runs to take the game. … Continue Reading

Lady Vikings Make it to Regional Semifinals in Lacrosse

Maya_Ebrahimnejad

The Loudoun Valley Ladies’ Lacrosse team made it to the Regional semifinals, but lost to crosstown rival and Dulles District champion Woodgrove, ending their season. With one of the youngest teams in recent memory, Valley surprised everyone with a highly successful season despite only returning 8 upperclassmen from last year’s team.

In dramatic fashion, the team had earned a bid to the Regional tournament with their overtime win over Tuscarora in Dulles District competition on Wednesday, May 16. The game was about as tense and exciting as it gets as both teams struggled to move on to qualify for the next round of play. The Lady Vikings, who beat Tuscarora handily just weeks ago in the regular season, took an early lead, but had their hands full as it was apparent the Huskies would not go quietly this time around. … Continue Reading

This track practice has become a May tradition for both Loudoun Valley High School and the two elementary schools, which are feeder schools to Valley. Viking Men Have Busy Week Versus George Mason, Tuscarora, and Woodgrove

By: John Steen and Tim Moore

Varsity Men Remain District Contenders with Decisive Win over George Mason, 19-0: The Vikings enjoyed the friendly confines of Leonard Stadium for Senior Night on April 30th. Pre-game senior honorees for the evening included: Lucas Clark, Donald Devine, Dylan Early, Chris Fiedler, Will Geise, Nicholas Colby Martin, Liz Martin (Mgr), Ian Miller, Hunter Nutter, Greg Regan, and Hope Wiseman (Mgr). During the game, the potent Viking attack took advantage of a youthful Mustang defense early and often to build a double-digit halftime lead. A stifling Viking defense, led by Donald Devine, Lucas Clark, and Zach Allison, caused numerous turnovers and limited George Mason to just a few shots on goal the entire game. In the all- important face-off battle, Valley took 19 of 23 (83 percent). It was fitting on Senior Night that Will Geise led the scoring with 6 goals and 1 assist. Other points leaders were freshman John Skinner (5 goals and 2 assists), sophomore Chase Miller (4 goals), and freshman Sully Warner (1 goal and 3 assists). Adding to the totals were seniors Greg Regan and Chris Fiedler with 1 goal each, junior Robbie Nelson with 1 goal, and freshman Jeremy Klipple with an assist. The Viking goalies had a quiet evening with freshman starter Nick Steen recording 1 save and junior Jim Shanks recording 3, after taking over net duties for the Vikes in the second half. … Continue Reading

Scheduled for Saturday, May 4, 11am-5pm and Sunday, May 5 from 12-4pm at Heritage High School, 520 Evergreen Mills Road SE in Leesburg, VA. The Scouting for Bricks™ event is open to the public. Tickets are $5 per person and available only at the door.

Visitors will be treated to over 30,000 square feet of LEGO related exhibits and merchandise. The vendor Brixalot will have over 100,000 LEGO and DUPLO blocks affording visitors a hands-on opportunity to play and create. Additional exhibitors include the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area LEGO Train Club, Abbie Dabbles, Brick Brigade, Bricks 4 Kids, Classic Plastic Bricks, Clone Army Customs, Play-Well, Snapology, and The Great Adventure Lab. Ashburn Robotics will host a robotic scrimmage and the amazing Great Ball Contraption will be on display, while live Star Wars ‘Stormtroopers’ from the 501st Legion will be roaming the exhibit halls.

Senior Patrol Leader Vincent Escobar, age 17, remarked, “The boys in the troop are very excited about Scouting for Bricks™, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking of the coolest vendors and exhibits and its awesome that so many are participating.” When asked what sparked the idea for the brick fair, Troop 39 Scoutmaster Joseph Gleason stated, “Many of the boys in our troop are LEGO fanatics who frequently exhibit at and attend at regional brick fairs, so we got the idea of hosting our own as a way for the boys to earn funds to cover camping equipment and activities.”

The purpose of the support group is to provide a supportive and encouraging environment as a part of the stroke recovery process for those who are affected by stroke and their caregivers. The group will meet the second Wednesday of the month from 11 a.m. – noon at Inova Loudoun Hospital, 44045 Riverside Parkway, Leesburg in the second floor Patient Education Room. The next Stroke Survivors and Caregivers Support Group will be on Wednesday, March 13. At the March meeting there will be a nutritionist speaker offering insight about nutrition after a stroke.

Stroke is a “brain attack” cutting off vital oxygen and blood to parts of the brain that control everything we do. Every year, stroke affects nearly 800,000 people in the US. The survivors of stroke forever experience changes that can affect speaking, walking, memory, and thinking. The recovery process after a stroke is life long. Socializing in a supportive and encouraging environment is an important part of stroke recovery. Support groups allow stroke survivors and caregivers to interact with others who understand the life changes that occur after stroke.

Participation is free and registration isn’t required. For further information, please contact Robyn Thomson at 703-858-6667 or robyn.thomson@inova.org.

Qigong is similar to Tai Chi, but much simpler to learn because the movements are fewer. These are done standing, so participants must be comfortable in an upright position. Master Bauch will be teaching proper breathing techniques along with the movements, and will be helping students to understand the physical benefits of this exercise form, which has an 800 year history. Please come to the first session and see what it is all about.
