Purcellville Library Book Sale

This year the Purcellville Library is trying something new for the Fall book Sale. The Book Sale will take place over two days, Saturday October 8, and Sunday October 9. On Saturday the 8 everything will be full price all day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Sunday the 9th everything will be on sale for half price from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

We hope the extended hours will give everyone more time to look through the many items that will be for sale. For the most part the sale will be inside the library and more items will be brought out throughout the day as space opens up. Plan to visit several times over the weekend.

Painted Wine Barrels To Be Sold at Auction October 8

Those painted, oak wine barrels you’ve been seeing around town will go on sale at public auction October 8.

The casks were given to 35 Loudoun County artists to create Purcellville/Loudoun themes on them, and will be on display throughout Purcellville through September. Maps of the locations of the barrels, and the names of the artists, are available at town businesses and at www.discoverpurcellville.com.

The Friday, October 8, Auction for the Painted Barrels will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Bush Tabernacle Skating Rink. Mexican food from Casa Tequila, along with beer and wine, will be available for purchase. The $10 tickets include chances to win prizes, including one of the Painted Barrels. Brian Damewood of Damewood Auctioneers will conduct the sale.

The Painted Barrels project has been coordinated through the Purcellville Economic Development Advisory Committee, and spearheaded by Michael Oaks. Each barrel has been sponsored by a local business.  For more information, call 540-751-0707.

Beginning the week of July 11, Arthur Construction Co., Inc., with inspection services by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will begin remedial work on the storm sewer along the west side of N. 21st Street, between the W&OD Trail and Branbury Court. Total construction time is anticipated to take approximately 6 weeks. During this period, the contractor will be working in the roadway from 8:00 am to 3:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. The contractor will be utilizing a single lane closure with flaggers to direct traffic in the southbound direction during this period. Sparks flew at the usually calm June 14 Purcellville Town Council Meeting. In addition to general business issues, the town’s 2017 budget came up, with the Town Council voting 5-2 to pass it. Mayor Kwasi Fraser and Council Member Kelli Grim voted against approval, with Vice Mayor Patrick McConville and Council Members Joan Lehr, Karen Jimmerson, John Nave and Doug McCollum voting to approve a $10.9 million General Fund, a $540,000 million Parks and Recreation Fund, a $9 million Utility Fund and $1.2 million in Capital Projects.

On June 2 the Purcellville Planning Commission met to revisit agenda items from its May 5 session, addressing talking points from the Comprehensive Plan Review and the adjustment of zoning ordinance language concerning streams and land disturbance.

The Bush Tabernacle Teen Center and The Town of Purcellville are offering free movie and skating nights on Wednesdays from June 22 through August 24. The Bush Tabernacle skating rink (located at 250 S. Nursery Ave, Purcellville VA 20132) is set up with hundreds of comfy padded chairs so the entire family can enjoy a movie and night out in comfort. The movies start at 7:00 p.m. and are immediately followed by free skating until 10:00 p.m. Popcorn, pizza, candy, and drinks are available for purchase; no outside food is permitted.

The movies for the 2016 season are: (1) June 22 — Inside Out; (2) June 29 — Norm of the North; (3) July 6 — Pan; (4) July 13 — Minions; (5) July 20 — Max; (6) July 27 — The Good Dinosaur; (7) August 3 — Hotel Transylvania; (8) August 10 — Mall Cop 2; (9) August 17 — Open Season Scared Silly; and (10) August 24 — Cinderella.

“Painted Barrels Around Purcellville,” a Community Art Project coordinated by the Purcellville Economic Development Advisory Committee, will unveil over 30 oak barrels painted by local artists. Each artist volunteered his or her time and talent and was asked to paint a Purcellville or Western Loudoun County theme on a barrel. “Man, did they get creative!” said Michael Oaks, project coordinator and EDAC member. “What a wide range of artist that contributed, from two eleven-year-old students, Participants from VSA Arts of Loudoun County, and some the area’s top professional artists.”
