Your Voice Is Your Influence … Use It!!

November 4, 2015 News, Our Towns 1 comment

By Kwasi Fraser, Mayor of Purcellville

Over the past months, I have advocated completion of the revision to our existing Comprehensive Plan prior to pursuing and enacting any of the Planning Commission’s recommended zoning use changes.  This would enable us to better align our zoning ordinance with the needs of our citizens, current and future.  Indeed, the Planning Commission has committed significant time and effort to the zoning use change exercise. I realized my position would face strong opposition, and it has – as it should – since we are a democracy.

We are reminded, however, that the voices of the citizens should always prevail.  This was especially evident in our citizens’ and businesses’ participation at last week’s public hearing, and from emails and letters to this council conveying their concerns with the proposed zoning use changes. … Continue Reading

Purcellville Police Are Honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October 22, 2015 News, Our Towns Comments Off on Purcellville Police Are Honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Residents and visitors of the Town may notice the Purcellville Police Officers are donning pink tee shirts under their navy blue uniforms. This is in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to show solidarity for all those who struggle with the fight against cancer and their friends and family who support them through the fight. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

Chief McAlister states, “We are part of the community and we wanted to step up in a small way to show we care, and my hope is that by placing a focus on cancer, more people may take the time to visit their doctors for annual exams. This gives a better chance of catching cancer early and hopefully getting a better diagnosis.”

For more information on the Police Department’s efforts supporting breast cancer awareness, please contact Lt. Schroeck.

Fire at Leesburg Restaurant

October 17, 2015 News, Our Towns Comments Off on Fire at Leesburg Restaurant

The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that the October 12 fire at 1607 Village Market Boulevard, which resulted in $15,000 in damages, was accidental and caused by a lack of maintenance on the restaurant’s flue.

At 11:20 a.m., Monday, October 12, fire and rescue units from Leesburg, Kincora, Moorefield, Cascades, Ashburn, Hamilton, Purcellville and Brambleton responded to 1607 Village Market Boulevard for a structure fire. First arriving units quickly determined the fire was located on the roof of the restaurant located at this address. Firefighters contained the fire to the restaurant’s duct work and surrounding area within the roof itself. Fire crews also conducted extensive overhaul from within the occupancy below ensuring no fire extension to the adjacent businesses or the nearby apartments. Residents in the immediately adjacent apartments were evacuated as a precaution.

The Fire Marshal’s Office has issued two correction orders to the owner of the property for repairs to the flue. There were no reported injuries to fire and rescue personnel; however, one civilian was transported to a local area hospital for checkout.

Summer 2015 Citizen Survey Reveals Deep Disillusion with Town’s Approach To Growth and Zoning

September 30, 2015 News, Our Towns Comments Off on Summer 2015 Citizen Survey Reveals Deep Disillusion with Town’s Approach To Growth and Zoning

“Stop the developers who, when given the chance, will Fairfax-ize this beautiful town and not look back.”

In July of 2015, Purcellville surveyed its citizens to “obtain vital information and a snapshot of [residents’] overall level of satisfaction” with the town. The survey measured 370 overall responses with questions about town services and staff, Loudoun County services, taxes, government and elected officials, and more.

With the exception of the town’s water and wastewater policies – where citizens gave the town a low 41 percent satisfied/very satisfied rating – Purcellville got high marks from its citizens. But, looking deeper, citizens expressed quite a bit of skepticism about town policies, particularly with respect to its approach to growth and zoning. … Continue Reading
