Middleburg Academy Basketball Champions

April 1, 2015 Sports Comments Off on Middleburg Academy Basketball Champions

The Middleburg Academy boys varsity basketball team (ranked #1) won the VISAA D-III state championship against Christ Chapel (ranked #3) with a score of 66-62. Christ Chapel enjoyed leading much of the game with a determined defense and a fast-paced attack that found Middleburg Academy playing as much as 10 points behind in the third quarter. It was in the final quarter that Middleburg Academy responded to overtake Christ Chapel.

The team’s coach, Jaye Haggler said, “When I walked on to the Middleburg Academy Campus I could have never have imagined this outcome. My goal was to teach the boys how to play this game and in the end I learned how and what it meant to sacrifice everything. I watched my guys grow from boys to men in one season. I could not be more proud and will never be for my first state championship and the young men who helped us achieve this goal.”

Middleburg Academy’s Athletic Director Carla Adgate said, “There is not another group that is more deserving of a state championship than the young men on our boys varsity basketball team, Coach Haggler and his coaching staff. They worked extremely hard in the off season and all season long. Things were not going well for them most of the championship game. They trailed Christ Chapel for the entire game, but somehow dug down deep and played together as a team to pull out the victory. I am so proud and happy for all of them.”

Loudoun Valley Boys Basketball Winning Streak

March 4, 2015 Sports Comments Off on Loudoun Valley Boys Basketball Winning Streak

After starting 3-8 they have won 12 of the last 14 including a 4th straight region quarterfinal win against 21-2 Culpeper on Friday February 27.  The Vikings advance for the fourth year in a row to the Region Semi-finals.

The Vikings mid-season improvement was largely due to the fact that they have started a freshmen point guard, 11 Jalen Williams, and two sophomore guards 2 Nick Ball and 23 Jamir Deree and it took some games against good competition to get them acclimated to varsity basketball and learning to win close games.  Jalen, Nick and Jamir have become a young dominating force for both on offense and in the full court defense.  Jalen leads the team with 45 made three point field goals, while Nick leads in point per game at 11, and Jamir averages 7.5 ppg and 5 rebounds per game.  … Continue Reading

This spring 2014 Upper Loudoun Little League season found drenching rains making fields unplayable on a regular basis. Over 100 games were rescheduled due to wet, soggy fields, said league president, Norris Beavers. “The most I have ever remembered in my 28 years of volunteering with Upper Loudoun Little League!” After countless hours of work to complete all the games, by the end of June, the seasons were done ending with the yearly tournaments for ULLL. Played under the lights at Haske Field in Purcellville, the championship games are full of energy and draw large crowds to cheer on the young players. … Continue Reading

Lady Vikings Claim District Lacrosse Title

June 3, 2014 Sports Comments Off on Lady Vikings Claim District Lacrosse Title

By Mac Shuford

The Loudoun Valley girls lacrosse team beat Woodgrove 10-7 on May 22 for the district championship. It was a hard fought victory and a long time coming as Valley had never beaten Woodgrove until this game, having narrowly lost last year’s district and regional Titles in the same stadium. Woodgrove scored first after winning the opening draw and held that lead until about halfway into the first half with their ball control offense and aggressive defense. However, the Wolverines had no answer for Valley senior and district player of the year Corley Simons as her third goal of the night gave the Vikings a 5-4 lead while she controlled nearly every draw in the first half. … Continue Reading

April 30, 2014 Sports Comments Off on Loudoun Valley Lady Laxers off to Blistering Start

By Mac Shuford

The Loudoun Valley Girls’ Lacrosse Team is on fire this year. With recent wins over powerhouses Broad Run and Battlefield, the team is off to a 7-1 start with the sole loss being to last year’s state runner up and 6A stalwart, Langley HS. Led by seniors Corley Simons, Ashlyn DiLoreto, and Courtney Schollian, the Lady Vikings are in the hunt for a state title this time around after bowing out in the semifinals last June. With the Loudoun Valley construction project in full swing and multiple injuries to key starters, it has been a tough road this year, but Coaches Tracey Albro and Amy Rollins have their girls in fine form for what should be their best season. … Continue Reading

Blue Ridge Team Visits Salamander Resort

February 4, 2014 Sports Comments Off on Blue Ridge Team Visits Salamander Resort

The Blue Ridge Middle School travel basketball team recently got a tour of the new Salamander Resort in Middleburg from the owner herself, Sheila Johnson. Team mom Deb Cadenas contacted Johnson asking for a sponsorship to buy some spirit wear for the team.

“I was shocked when I got a call personally from Dr. J. at my home saying she wanted to not only help our school but the whole Western Loudoun Basketball League with a gold sponsorship,” Cadenas said. “This is a $10,000 gift that helps over 100 teams. She said she loves basketball and wanted to help the kids play sports and knew it was expensive to pay for court time. Our team was so taken back by her generosity that it made a profound impact on both the players and their parents.” … Continue Reading

December 3, 2013 Sports Comments Off on Ida Lee Flag Football Teams Make Run at NFL Regional Championship

The Leesburg NFL Flag Football league was represented by two teams at the New York Jets NFL Regional Tournament held in Lincoln Park, New Jersey, on November 16.

The 12-and-under “Ida Lee Fast and Furious,” coached by Eric Johnson and Dave Sorrell, had an outstanding tournament, and were undefeated – allowing zero points in pool play, earning them the number two seed out of 36 teams. Ultimately, they fell just short in the semifinals in a hard fought game.  The 10-and-under “Ida Lee Gamer’z,” coached by Brian Dean and Mike Scarnato, also had very successful pool play.  The Gamer’z finished pool play undefeated and only gave up 6 points, earning them the number three seed out of 28 teams.   Despite a valiant effort, they lost in the second round of playoffs against a tough Boston team. … Continue Reading
